Are you aware that Australians spend more than $300 billion a year on retail therapy!

Before you whip out that credit card & hit the shops be aware of knowing your shopping rights.

Quoted from Today Tonight.
“You never quite know when it is going to be called upon for you to put your foot down.

“The key is to forget store policies but know the law and your rights before purchasing.”

“A sign ‘no refunds’ is actually not worth the paper it is written on, if what you’ve bought isn’t what you’ve promised in terms of quality or any defects in it then you can get a refund.”

I can certainly identify with the ‘putting your foot down’.  My son purchased the new Guitar Hero late Wed arvo.  Took it home & he spent the next 4 hours trying to get the wireless signal to sync..on the 2 occasions it finally connected it lasted for about 5 mins. (looked like a lot of fun if it actually worked) To say there was a lot of cursing during this time was an understatement!

Next day we  returned it to JB Hi-Fi. My son said “Don’t you say anything”.  I kept quiet until they started sprouting their ’store policy’ - No Refunds!  Deciding not to chance another dud he didn’t want an exchange just a store credit…(though the cash would have been better)  Things just got a little trickier.

We were told they would test it and if it worked in store it must be our equipment & no refund would be allowed!  By this time I was frothing at the mouth & started stating our consumer rights!  It was faulty & did not work and cost $130!  As they were busy & I’m sure he just wanted to solve the problem & get rid of us he gave the store credit.

All I can say is good move for the salesperson’s judgement….. because…..If you feel your rights have been ignored (as I would have)  and you are not getting resolve with the retailer, you can take your complaint to the NSW Department of Fair Trading

ACCC has a free Your Consumer Rights Refunds wallet card & other great information for both consumer & business helping you to knowing your shopping rights.
