The Australian of the Year Award was introduced in 1960 with these awarded over the past 10 years.

2007 Professor Tim Flannery, scientist/environmentalist

2006 Professor Ian Frazer, doctor–scientist

2005 Fiona Wood AM, doctor

2004 Steve Waugh, cricketer

2003 Professor Fiona Stanley AC, doctor–researcher

2002 Patrick Rafter, tennis player

2001 Lt General Peter Cosgrove AC MC, soldier

2000 Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE FAA FRS, scientist

1999 Mark Taylor, cricketer

1998 Cathy Freeman, athlete

These are the 4 categories open for nomination:
*Australian of the Year
*Senior Australian of the Year (60 yrs & over)
*Young Australian of the Year (16 to 30 yrs)
*Australia’s Local Hero

Once you’ve chosen your nominee you need to write at least 100 words telling about your nominee.
* How are they an inspirational role model.
* How have they demonstrated excellence in their field and to the community.

The Australians of the Year receive a unique work of art glass trophies designed and created by Melbourne-based artist Kristin McFarlane.

Last Year’s 2008 Recipients….
Australian of the Year—Lee Kernaghan OAM
A country music performer who has won 24 Golden Guitar awards at the Australian Country Music Awards. Recognized for his efforts to help rural families and raised more than $1 million for communities in need.

Senior Australian of the Year—David Bussau AM
A social entrepreneur and one of the pioneers of the micro-enterprise movement.

Young Australian of the Year—Casey Stoner
Motorbike racer in recognition of his success as a MotoGP champion.

Australia’s Local Hero—Jonathon Welch
A Choral conductor who helped a group of down-and-out Australians fight homelessness, depression and drug addiction to sing in his Choir of Hard Knocks.
